Active since 1983, APT's Western Chapter was created to serve as a regional forum for preservation practitioners in Arizona, California, and Nevada. With approximately 150 members, the chapter has sponsored many events, including conferences on concrete and on retrofit work for seismic-resistant upgrades, a symposium on disaster response, and many lectures and tours. The chapter served as the organizing committee for APT's annual meeting in 1985, as well as for the APT 2001 annual conference at Asilomar in Monterey, California.
The majority of APT chapters which collect memberships charge $30 for an individual, and this amount is seen as appropriate to grow the chapter into the future. WCAPT has selected a membership annual renewal period to coincide with APT International, from July 1 to June 30, to encourage membership in both. To further encourage membership in APTI, a 33% discount is applied to WCAPT membership for APTI members. WCAPT is the only APT chapter to apply this discount.
An innovation of the Western Chapter is to charge no fee for students with a current student ID. This is intended to encourage student membership and participation in student scholarships.
A new class of membership, Corporate, will aid in the financial security strategy. There are several benefits to Corporate membership in WCAPT: the member company has prominent promotional placement at events and in printed promotional material; discounted or complementary admission to events; prominent placement in the Member Directory. Sponsor level membership admits three representatives of the organization or firm as members, while Patron level membership admits six representatives as members.
