ICCROM 4th Training Course on Conservation of Built Heritage
Rome, Italy
The course aims at serving a wide range of conservation practitioners and decision makers by placing technical issues within the broader conservation context in order to link them to planning and management concerns.
The first part of the course will consist of an overview of the current practices of defining heritage, evolution of different concepts and key approaches currently used in built heritage conservation.
The second part of the course will focus on the planning and management issues pertaining to the conservation decision making process.
The third part of the course will focus more closely on technical issues including documentation, conditions assessments and various treatments plus interpretation and public access. A special module on 'Sustainable Development and World Heritage' will be included during the last week of the course.

Cast Iron Symposium
Galveston, TX
Galveston's 12-block Strand/Mechanic National Historic Landmark District contains one of the largest collections of cast-iron historic
commercial buildings in the country. In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, the City of Galveston received a federal grant to rehabilitate
the city's rich cast iron architectural heritage. In conjunction with the upcoming restoration, Galveston Historical Foundation will be
offering a Symposium on the history, manufacture and maintenance of cast iron on April 12-13th, 2012 at the historic Tremont House, in downtown Galveston. Leading conservators, preservationists and fabricators will speak to the challenges of sustaining these cultural treasures in a coastal environment.

Society of Architectural Historians Annual Conference
Detroit, MI
Detroit will serve as both a welcoming host and a subject of study. While Detroits recent history has been one of deindustrialization and outmigrationcommon to many cities in the Midwestits past includes a commitment to good design seen both in the products of the automobile industry and in the buildings connected to it. Twenty-two tours explore Detroit and its environs, including three separate tours of Cranbrook, five tours on various aspects of modernism, three on 19th-century architecture, and one on the automobile industry. The conference begins with a day-long preservation seminar called Retooling the Motor City, examining why certain areas of Detroit are successfully experiencing a rebirth.
The meeting will also include thirty-five paper sessions over three days. Topics range from Latin American modernism to Roman Asia Minor, from Albert Kahn to the baroque and rococo, from shrinking cities to city air. The geographical and chronological coverage of these sessions should insure that no one will be disappointed.

TechFocus II: Caring for Film and Slide Art
Washington, DC
The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation (FAIC), the Smithsonian Institutions Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Electronic Media Group of the American Institute for Conservation are presenting a two-day workshop on the convervation of film and slides.
TechFocus II is designed to educate conservators, curators and other art professionals about the technology of film and slide-based artworks, and to recommend best practices for acquisition, preservation and display.
As part of this instruction, the workshop includes a unique School of Seeing: actual films and slides are projected as examples of different production processes, so that participants can gain an accurate understanding of the principles being discussed.

38th Annual Canadian Assoc for the Conservation of Cultural Property (CAC) Conference and Workshop
Peterborough, Ontario
The 2012 CAC workshop and conference will be held at the Holiday Inn Waterfront in downtown Peterborough, Ontario. A two-day workshop, "Preservation Unplugged", will explore new trends in preventive conservation with an emphasis on cultural facilities and will be held 22 to 23 May.
A half-day workshop on basket-making will be held at the Curve Lake Cultural Centre on 23 May.
The conference theme, the "Power of Preservation" will look at preservation aspects that highlight the significance, value, advocacy, and interpret the tangible and intangible aspects of what we do as preservation specialists in a wide scope of materials and disciplines.

15th International Course on Wood Conservation Technology

The ICWCT is directed towards professionals who have been working for some years within the field of wood conservation.
The ICWCT covers a wide range of interdisciplinary topics. Theoretical and practical aspects of wood conservation are given equal consideration throughout the course. Some of the most interesting cultural heritage sites constructed in wood in Norway will be visited during the course, including the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Urnes Stave church and the Hanseatic Wharf in Bergen. Exercises and demonstrations are organized during the main excursion. The course concludes with a written exam, which awards university credits if passed.
