Keynote Lecture - [FS01]

Foundations of Sand? - A Commentary on Quality and Consistency in Conservation and the Need for Standards
John Fidler, BA (Hons), Dip Arch, M Arch, MA Conservation, Dipl Conservation, RIBA, IHBC, FRSA, FAPT, FSA, Conservation Director, English Heritage, London, England

Mr. Fidler is well known to APT having served on the board, and being elected to the APT College of Fellows in 2000. He is an architect and conservation specialist with an international reputation. His work at English Heritage began in 1984 as the UK’s first Conservation Officer for Buildings at Risk, a post he assumed after a wide-ranging practice that included the rehabilitation of tenement dwellings in Salford, medieval churches, and Winchester Cathedral. He had also served as the first Historic Buildings Architect for the City of London, where he was responsible for the conservation of the city’s Roman walls, the medieval Guildhall, and the 18th century Lord Mayor’s Mansion House. He has published extensively, and the research and outreach programs of English Heritage have received international acclaim under his leadership.

Standards in Conservation and Cultural Diversity
Nicholas Stanley-Price, MA, DPhil, Director-General, International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), Rome, Italy

Dr. Stanley-Price has been Director-General of ICCROM in Rome since August 2000. He carried out archaeological research and administration in the Middle East for twelve years before specializing in conservation and professional education. He has held positions at ICCROM (1982-86), the Getty Conservation Institute (1987-95), and the Institute of Archaeology, University College, London (1998-2000). He has edited a number of books, including Conservation on Archaeological Excavations (ICCROM, 1984; reprinted 1995), Preventive Measures During Excavation and Site Protection (ICCROM, 1986), and (with K. Talley and A. Melucco Vaccaro) Historical and Philosophical Issues in Conservation of Cultural Heritage (Getty Conservation Institute, 1996). He was the founder of, and serves as editor for, the journal Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites.
