The Vasa—a New Life for a 17th Century Warship

Klas Helmerson, Director, Vasa Museum, The National Maritime Museums of Sweden, Stockholm, Sweden

Mr. Helmerson has an academic background in Slavonic languages and Arabic, but also practical experience from the Swedish Merchant Marine and the Navy. He has served as a translator at the Swedish Naval Staff and as a Programme Officer with the UN Development Programme in Yemen, but his main professional career has been with the National Maritime Museums of Sweden, which he first joined as an educator in 1970. In 1997 he became Director of the Vasa Museum. Since 2003, he has also been Director of the Swedish Maritime Museum. Since March 2005, he has been Director General a.i. of the National Maritime Museums of Sweden, a group that includes the Vasa and Maritime Museums in Stockholm and the Naval Museum in Karlskrona.

Since 1999 he has been a member of the Executive Council of the International Congress of Maritime Museums and President of the same in 2002-2004.

He has published numerous articles on the Vasa and other maritime subjects.

Current Preservation of the Vasa—a Challenge for Science and Technology

Lars I. Elding, PhD, FRSC, The National Maritime Museums of Sweden and Lund University, Sweden

Dr. Elding has been involved with the Vasa warship as scientific coordinator of a multi-faceted international research program launched in 2003. His research interests include fast chemical reactions, including those related to atmospheric formation of acid rain and to catalytic processes of industrial relevance, described in more than 120 articles in international scientific literature. Professor Elding has contributed in various capacities at the Swedish Natural Science Research Council; Chalmers’ University of Technology, Gothenburg; the Chemical Center of Lund University; and Lund Technical University. He has participated in evaluation committees of the Swedish Science and Engineering Research Councils; EU research programs; and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Professor Elding is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London, and the Royal Physiographic Society, Lund, and member of the American and Swedish Chemical Societies. He has lectured extensively in the USA, the UK, Switzerland, Russia, South Africa, Italy, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Denmark and Finland.
