Objectives:
This two-day technical workshop will address the physical and chemical
characteristics of concrete; techniques of field and laboratory
investigation; and methods of repair, restoration, and protection for
historic concrete. Attention will be given to issues of matching concrete
for repair of historic structures. Course sessions will include lectures,
review of case studies, and participation in theoretical investigations
led by experts. Participants will have an opportunity to examine samples
in a laboratory set up especially for the course and to participate in
hands-on examples of concrete repair.
Content:
Saturday sessions will involve presentations on the history and
preservation considerations of concrete; investigative techniques; repair
materials; repair techniques; protection systems; cleaning assessment and
techniques of concrete; and surface preparation techniques.
Sunday sessions will include mockups and samples; matching
historic concrete; field and laboratory testing and analysis; hands-on
sessions involving laboratory testing and analysis; cleaning; and matching
and finishing techniques, as well as case studies. Provision will be made
each day for question and answer sessions.
