WHAT IS APT?

The Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) is a cross-disciplinary, membership organization dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings. Membership in APT provides exceptional opportunities for networking and the exchange of ideas.

APT members, who hail from more than 30 countries, include preservationists, architects, engineers, conservators, consultants, contractors, craftspersons, curators, developers, educators, historians, landscape architects, students, technicians, and other persons directly involved in the application of methods and materials to maintain, conserve, and protect historic structures and sites for future use and appreciation.

The international, interdisciplinary character of APT - with its outstanding publications, conferences, training courses, awards, student scholarships, regional chapters, and technical committees - makes it the premier worldwide network for anyone involved in the field of historic preservation.

The Preservation Technology Primer

The Preservation Technology Primer is a new guide to preservation practice with articles of cutting-edge technologies, preservation theory, and innovative solutions from leading international practitioners. The Primer brings together 52 of the best articles that have been published over the past 40 years in the APT Bulletin, the leading technical journal for professionals in historic preservation. This new publication is an important ready reference for those entering the field and provides a much-needed text for preservation-technology courses in academic programs and in training and education programs for crafts and trades.

APT Building Technology Heritage Library

"A modern portal to the material past"
The APT Building Technology Heritage Library is an on-line, digitized collection of architectural and construction trade catalogs and related publications available for use by the public at no charge. The culmination of a four-year effort, the library is hosted as part of the Internet Archive at:
www.archive.org/details/
buildingtechnologyheritagelibrary

More than 1,000 catalogs are now online, including a substantial number of house-plan catalogs. These materials are not in collections that are part of the Google Books project, so this effort does not duplicate any other digitization projects.

James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation to Award Fitch Mid-Career Research Grants

The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation will award Fitch Mid-Career research grants of up to $15,000 to mid-career professionals who have an academic background, professional experience and an established identity in one or more of the following fields: historic preservation, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, environmental planning, architectural history and the decorative arts. The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation will consider proposals for the research and/or the execution of the preservation-related projects in any of these fields.

The Mid-Career grants reflect the robustness of the preservation field in the United States today with topics ranging from sociological concerns in American neighborhood preservation to innovative thinking in adaptive use of redundant train stations to scientific study of and prescriptions for conserving specialized 19th century construction techniques. The locales of the topics are wide ranging as well: from the outer boroughs of New York City to South Louisiana and pueblos in the American Southwest.
