Thomas Edison, Concrete, and the "Salvation of the Slum Dweller"

In the first decades of the twentieth century, Thomas Edison was one of numerous entrepreneurs—and one of the most well-known, then as now-- to explore the architectural possibilities of reinforced cast concrete. While using concrete for individual buildings at his laboratory and estate in West Orange, NJ, he sought to develop the material to revolutionize workers’ housing production. This presentation will discuss Edison’s ideas, experimentation, and patents for cast concrete, as well as the built legacy of his research in the US and Europe.

Naomi Kroll Hassebroek is a senior conservator with the National Park Service, where she has worked since 1998 providing technical preservation services to parks as part of the Historic Architecture, Conservation, and Engineering Center. She holds an M.A. in the history of art and archaeology and an advanced certificate in the conservation of historic and artistic works from NYU's Institute of Fine Arts, where she first became interested in the history of reinforced concrete. In 2009 she received grants from the Netherland-America and Albright-Wirth Foundations to research Edison-concept houses in the Netherlands and France.

Materials Roundtable talks are scheduled for one hour with a presentation and discussion.
