Introduction:

Linseed oil with earth-pigments was one of the most common architectural paints used in the United States until it was phased out in favor of petrochemical vehicles and plastic-based binders in the 1950s. Degummed linseed oil paints are enjoying a renaissance as a wood finish, but their suitability and performance require an understanding of their properties, behavior, and parameters for use. This talk covers the basic material science of modern linseed oils: how linseed oils are made, how they dry, how they interact with substrates, and how they weather—all properties that differ from contemporary water-borne paints.

Presenter:

Erin Gibbs is the Program Manager for the NPS’s Brick Earth Stone and Timber (BEST) Preservation Program, offered through the Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC). Her work includes the development and delivery of technical preservation workshops for traditional building materials. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from Macalester College and a Master of Science degree in Historic Preservation from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
