Structural Memory: Timber Framing and the Living Legacy of Historic Preservation

Join Jackson DuBois, Executive Director of the Timber Framers Guild and one of the North American carpenters who helped reconstruct the spire of Notre-Dame de Paris, for a journey through the craft of timber framing. From grassroots community building to high-profile international restoration projects, DuBois will discuss the Timber Framers Guild’s evolving role of timber framing in cultural heritage conservation. Jackson will highlight (1) timber framing and traditional joinery techniques and (2) how the Guild provides interactive training, education, and inspiration for building conservation to meet the needs for the next generation of preservation practitioners.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the role of traditional timber framing and joinery in the conservation and restoration of historic structures, using the Notre-Dame de Paris spire reconstruction as a case study.
  • Explain how traditional timber framing and innovative repairs are being incorporated into cultural heritage preservation.
  • Identify the ways in which the Timber Framers Guild contributes to education, training, and community building using the craft of timber framing and timber engineering.
  • Recognize the significance of craft-based knowledge to local and global heritage conservation initiatives.

Jackson DuBois, Executive Director, Timber Framers Guild

Jackson DuBois has worked as a timber framer for 20 years on a diverse variety of projects both domestically and abroad for individuals, companies, institutions, museums, NGO’s and not for profits. His experience ranges from historic reproductions, hand hewn and cut with hand tools, to modern custom heavy timber construction. As a Journeyed Timber Framer with the Timber Framers Guild, Jackson is well versed in all aspects of timber construction.  In 2014 he founded DuBois Timber Frames LLC, specializing in historic building restoration, preservation, and adaptive reuse. The firm also designs, plans, and provides construction of quality timber frame structures for diverse clientele in the United States and abroad. Jackson has served in various capacities with the Timber Framers Guild of Alstead, New Hampshire, including the Board of Directors, Clerk and President of the Guild, and currently as the Executive Director of the Timber Framers Guild since 2023. Jackson recently spent time in France working with the company Asselin in their Thouars, France workshop from May - July of 2023 taking part in the reconstruction of the Spire (La Flèche) of Notre Dame de Paris.

 

Ron Anthony, FAPT, President and Wood Scientist for Anthony & Associates

Ron Anthony, President and Wood Scientist for Anthony & Associates, received an M.S. in Wood Science and Technology from Colorado State University. He has focused on evaluating the performance of wood in historic structures and conducting forensic investigations. He has authored over 125 publications; participated in conferences and seminars; and consulted throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and the South Pacific. He is the 2002 recipient of the James Marston Fitch Foundation Grant for his approach to evaluating wood in historic buildings; he is a Fellow in the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT), a recipient of APT’s Harley J. McKee Award, APT’s Arthur J. Femenella Award for Distinguished Mentorship, and APT’s Martin E. Weaver Award.
