MATERIALS DISCUSSION: FIELD TO FABRICATION: 3D SCANNING AND MODELING WITH A MANUFACTURER'S MINDSET

Thursday, April 18, 2024
4pm - 5pm ET

(Session is Full - Registration is Closed)

Through multiple projects and materials, the presenters will share the challenges faced in combining digital and traditional techniques in the effort to streamline the restoration process. The presenters will cover the strengths and weaknesses of various scanning technologies and discuss strategies for maximizing the use of 3D scanning and modeling to support fragment-free manufacturing for preservation and new construction projects.

Speakers:

Alan Barr
Alan Barr has worked in the architectural stone industry for more than 30 years. He has served in the capacities of drafter, engineer, fabricator, supplier and project manager on custom architectural stone projects using a wide variety of materials, including dimensional stone, architectural precast, cast stone & GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete). As an expert in the use and application of these materials for building façade restoration and new construction, he understands the importance of obtaining accurate field dimensions in order to design new stone that fits existing conditions.  His current company specializes in combining traditional field measuring techniques with advanced digital technology to provide precision architectural stone design to contractors and fabricators.

Mike Fritz
As VA4D Program Leader for Vertical Access, Michael Fritz brings nearly twenty years of experience in balancing traditional and digital arts in architectural restoration. His extensive knowledge of architectural terra cotta manufacturing and his passion for exploring the interplay between art, architecture, and digital workflows has guided an inventive career in 3D-modeling, photogrammetry, digital documentation, site survey, and digital sculpture. Currently, Mike is leading the firm's VA4D initiative, a suite of services focused on digitally capturing and modeling heritage structures for designers, contractors, and manufacturers.  Michael holds a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and an MFA from the University at Buffalo.
