APT Technical Committee - Materials presents another Materials Talk Webinar!
March, 15, 2022
2:00 - 3:00 PM ET

THREE KINDS OF IRON: WROUGHT, CAST, AND MILD STEEL

Nick Lyle will discuss three forms of architectural iron: wrought iron, cast iron, and mild steel. Each have their own history and differ in their metallurgy, working properties, and weathering characteristics. The presentation will outline these histories and introduce the material properties as understood by a fabricator. The presentation will also include observations of changing conditions of outdoor sculptures over time.

Presenter:
Nick Lyle

Nick is an artist, smith, and ironworker with Whitesavage & Lyle, on Whidbey Island, Washington. He and his wife, Jean Whitesavage, design and fabricate large-scale forged steel sculpture; their public works can be found in the Pacific Northwest, New York City, Washington DC, and San Jose, California. Lyle’s lifelong interest in the history of science and materiality informs all their design and fabrication choices.
